We know that breathing is an essential function of life, yet it’s something we often take for granted. The truth is, the way we breathe can impact how we feel. This is particularly important for children, as their emotions can be influenced by their breathing patterns.
Shallow breathing results from our stress response, a.k.a. “fight, flight, freeze response” — and deep breathing can effectively counteract this to promote relaxation. Read on to learn about the star breathing technique to help teach kids how to breathe deeply.
The Science and Research Behind Breathwork
Breathwork (which refers to different breathing techniques) works by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system.
A study involving 342 children found that a brief, animated deep breathing intervention can effectively reduce physiological arousal. Those assigned to watch the deep breathing video showed an increase in RSA (Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia, a measure of parasympathetic nervous system activity) and a decrease in HR (Heart Rate, a direct measure of physiological arousal.)
What This Means for Parents and Caregivers
Deep breathing is a teachable stress management skill. When we notice signs of stress or anxiety in our child or teen, we can encourage them to take a few deep breaths.
Star Breathing for Kids
One of my favorites, something I teach my clients in the therapy room, is the Star Breathing Technique. It involves visualizing a star shape while breathing deeply. Your child can practice it anytime, anywhere, whenever they need to take a moment for themselves!

Incorporating star breathing into your child’s daily routine can be a wonderful way to instill calmness in their life. Do it together before bedtime, during moments of tension, or simply as a fun family activity.
