Expressive Writing (PDF)

Writing down thoughts isn’t always easy, especially when feelings are heavy or difficult to express. Expressive writing offers a space where those feelings can be explored. Putting thoughts into words can help process emotions, gain clarity, and release what’s been held in.
The Expressive Writing handout is a one-page guide that introduces a freestyle writing approach that feels simple and personal. It provides tips on how to begin writing without pressure and includes writing prompts to guide clients in exploring their experiences and emotions. At the end, the handout reminds clients that their writing belongs to them — they can choose to keep it, tear it, or let it go.
This activity helps kids and teens process emotions, reduce stress, and improve emotional clarity. We recommend setting aside regular quiet time each week to turn expressive writing into a habit.
With the support of trusted adults, children may explore expressive writing beyond journaling. This may include writing a poem or drafting a short personal story.
