Behavioral Activation (PDF)

When someone feels low or stuck, it’s natural to lose interest in daily tasks, withdraw from others, or feel uncertain about what to do next. These patterns can create a cycle that makes it harder to experience motivation, pleasure, or connection. Fortunately, research shows that taking small, intentional steps toward meaningful activities — a process known as behavioral activation — can help break this cycle.

The Behavioral Activation handout explains to clients how their mood, activity, and motivation are connected. It begins by explaining the process and then gives them ideas for getting started.

As kids and teens take small, consistent actions, they can begin to feel more energized, hopeful, and in control of their emotions. To keep that momentum going, caring adults can encourage ongoing engagement by setting up simple challenges, like trying one new activity each week based on the handout’s categories.

Creating a “feel-good” space where young people can post photos, notes, or simple wins can also serve as a reminder of the positive impact that action can have over time.
