Compare And Despair CBT Handout
“Compare and Despair” is a type of mentality in which a client constantly compares themselves to others, which can lead to negative emotions and lowered self-esteem. Research shows that when people lack objective criteria to evaluate themselves, they’re more likely to seek external validation.
The Compare And Despair CBT Handout provides education about this cognitive pattern by explaining how it impacts a client’s mental health. It also offers examples for them to become aware of its presence in their lives, such as constantly thinking about how other people are better off than them. The final part of the handout lists 7 ways to break the comparison cycle.
This handout helps kids and teens recognize the consequences of comparison on their personal growth. If they need additional support in learning coping skills, feel free to introduce our resources on All About Gratitude and Goal Setting Tips For Success.
Users of this handout are encouraged to explore our 19-page CBT Handouts Bundle to discover more helpful resources for those who would benefit from CBT education or treatment.
