What Is Grief (PDF)
Children, like adults, experience grief in different ways, and their reactions may change depending on their age. Research suggests that their reactions towards grief are significantly affected by their emotional closeness to the person who has passed. Those who are closely attached to the deceased often show a stronger emotional response.
This What Is Grief? (PDF) handout offers a simple explanation of what grief feels like as well as the common thoughts and feelings that go with grief. At the bottom of the handout, clients will find 5 ways they can cope, such as self-care and celebrating the memory of their loved one.
Kids and teens who learn about grief will develop a deeper understanding of the process and realize they’re not alone. Caring adults should also be vigilant in observing their behavior and emotional state, and seek help from a mental health professional if they notice the child struggling.
This handout is included in our Grief And Loss Handouts Bundle, which provides 13 pages of tips, coping skills, and support for those experiencing grief.
