Coping Skills For Grief

Coping skills when grieving refer to the deliberate or automatic strategies and techniques clients use to manage the challenges brought about by loss. Loss often results in overwhelming feelings of sadness, which can lead some individuals to cope in unhealthy ways. Children and teens, in particular, may be vulnerable to these behaviors, but there are resources and strategies available to help them.

The Coping Skills For Grief handout offers 10 strategies for clients to cope effectively with their grief before it leads to feelings of loneliness and disconnection from those who support them. It introduces the RECOVERY acronym, along with two additional tips focused on understanding emotions and practicing patience.

Through the handout, kids and teens may find comfort as they try to process their emotions. They can set aside dedicated time each day to implement one or two of the suggested tips. Furthermore, parents and teachers can offer support through the grieving process by providing an environment that’s conducive to open communication.

This handout is included in our 13-page Grief And Loss Handouts Bundle, which provides several supportive resources for those enduring grief and loss.
