Values-Based Problem Solving

In a world full of choices, it’s easy to be pulled in different directions — especially when there’s pressure, urgency, or a desire to please others. Sometimes, it’s difficult to make the right choice, especially when emotions run high or values haven’t been explored. When choices are guided by values, decisions become clearer, more consistent, and more meaningful.

The Values-Based Problem Solving handout teaches clients to work through challenges by sticking to their values. This resource features eight core values, such as honesty, kindness, and responsibility. A compass visual is used to symbolize how these values can keep someone grounded and on track. The handout also outlines five clear steps for solving problems, with relatable examples.

As kids and teens go through each step, they’ll learn how to pause before reacting and ask themselves what matters most. They can take it a step further by choosing one real-life problem they’re facing and reviewing the five values-based steps again, but this time with someone they trust.

Having discussions with a caring adult gives them a chance to hear other perspectives and test their reasoning.
