Sadness is a core emotion that people start experiencing early in their lives. Kids and teenagers can feel sad for different reasons, such as losing a favorite toy, getting injured, being sick, or having conflict at school.

One of the ways young people can overcome sadness or negative emotions is to be prepared for them. This includes knowing what situations trigger sadness and being aware of their behaviors and reactions so they can tap into positive affirmations and coping skills.

Use this worksheet as a tool to help a child or teenager mentally prepare for moments of sadness. You may also help out by providing them with examples of healthy coping skills, such as taking deep breaths or visualizing their happy place.
