Managing Stress By Taking Breaks Handout
Taking breaks means stepping away from one’s work to be able to recharge. According to the cognitive load theory (CLT), our working memory has a finite capacity, and the more demands we place on our cognitive resources, the more likely our performance suffers.
The Managing Stress By Taking Breaks handout includes research about the positive impact of breaks on our brains and stress levels. Below the research findings is a list of 5 tips clients can follow, such as journaling, dancing, and getting crafty. The final part of the handout offers bonus stress management tips.
Using this handout helps kids and teens learn to interrupt the cycle of stress, which improves their mood and ability to perform. Note that some of the tips from the handout, such as “mindful moments” and “artsy fun breaks” may require a relaxation corner which includes a comfortable chair and table, and soft lighting. Be sure to provide those for your child.
This handout can be found in our 39-page Stress Management Handouts Bundle, which provides many unique stress relief strategies and ideas to support engagement in each strategy.
