Circle of Control for Kids

Some things in life are within a person’s control, while others are not. People can choose their words, actions, and responses, but they cannot change the past, control how others think and feel, or predict the future. Learning to recognize this difference is an important part of growing and sound decision-making.
The Circle of Control for Kids handout is a helpful tool for young clients to learn about personal responsibility and knowing their own limits. It clearly separates what they can control — such as their actions, choices, and attitude — from what is not, such as others’ opinions or outcomes from certain situations. The concept is represented as a circle: the inner section lists what is within their control, while the outer area shows what is not.
Keeping this reminder visible can help children stay grounded during tough moments. A helpful activity is to create a “circle of control” board where they write down current worries and sort them into two columns — what they can influence and what they need to accept.
Parents, caregivers, and teachers can share real-life examples of when they focused on what was within their control. Teaching this mindset helps build emotional maturity and reduces stress.
Our 4-page Circle of Control Worksheets can provide additional learning opportunities when paired with this handout.
