Depression Coping Skills for Kids

Coping with depression can sometimes feel challenging for younger clients because they may lack the experience to understand and process their emotions. It's like putting together a puzzle where each piece represents a different way of handling their feelings. These include creative activities, talking with trusted adults, and simple relaxation exercises.
The Depression Coping Skills for Kids handout guides young people on managing depression and finding relief through different coping methods they can incorporate into their daily routines. It has three sections: the first introduces four categories of coping skills, the second compares coping with depression to solving a puzzle, and the final section shares a sample self-care routine clients can follow.
Using this handout enables kids to better face reality and learn to manage their depressive symptoms. We recommend supporting them in creating a comforting routine that includes setting aside quiet time each day to relax or engage in activities that lift their spirits.
With your guidance, they can strengthen these habits in a way that feels empowering.
This handout pairs nicely with our Coping With Depression worksheet.

This is a great resource and tremendously helped several students with whom I work. My only request for improvement is that Mental Health Center for Kids offer additional free paper-based resources. Many of those using these worksheets, etc., are educators who often have to pay out-of-pocket for these resources and I think more of these worksheets & infographics should be available for free because those of us in the education field often do not have the extra cash to pay out-of-pocket for these worksheets. Thanks!
