Cognitive Distortions Poster

Cognitive distortions are negative thought patterns that distort reality, and are taught in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). They can lead clients to misunderstand situations, which may increase worry and sadness, and lower their confidence. If these thought patterns are left unnoticed or unaddressed, they can negatively impact mental health.
The Cognitive Distortions Poster highlights common cognitive distortions people deal with. Each distortion includes a simple definition and an example, which is useful for teaching them how to spot these thoughts. This poster is great for counseling offices, or therapy spaces as it encourages discussions about mental health.
This visual aid can guide kids and teens in recognizing common negative thinking patterns, and help reduce the likelihood of falling deeper into these patterns.
Once kids begin to recognize their common negative thinking patterns, caring adults can teach them how to reframe negative thoughts. A quick tool to support this proces is the Changing Negative Thoughts to Positive Thoughts Worksheet. The 3 C’s of Cognitive Therapy poster and Challenging Negative Thoughts poster are also helpful resources.
