Problem Solving Coping Skill (PDF)

Some problems feel too big to think about, especially when you’re unsure where to begin or feel pressure to fix things quickly. This stress can lead to mental blocks or rushed choices that don’t really help. But with the right structure, any challenge can start to feel more manageable.
This Problem Solving handout walks clients through a five-step process for handling tough situations, from defining the problem to reviewing what worked and making adjustments. Rather than promoting quick fixes, the handout encourages flexible thinking and a willingness to learn from trial and error.
Keeping this handout visible helps build confidence in kids and teens and support a habit of calm decision-making. To take it further, they can start a “solution journal,” where they can jot down any problem they solved during the week, big or small, and reflect on how they approached it.
Caring adults can also guide them through the 4 helpful questions included in the handout. They may answer them out loud during a therapy session or write their answers privately.
