DBT Pros And Cons Worksheet
The DBT pros and cons skill allows clients to compare the advantages and disadvantages of acting versus not acting on a crisis urge. Resisting a crisis urge can improve distress tolerance while acting on it can have serious consequences. The objective of this skill is to realize that accepting reality and tolerating distress results in better outcomes.
The DBT Pros and Cons Worksheet asks a client to describe the unhealthy crisis urge they are trying to avoid. It also includes a chart where they can list the short-term and long-term pros and cons of acting on or resisting an unhealthy urge. The worksheet also includes a cut-out section where they can be reminded to make the right decision when something negative happens.
By using this worksheet, kids and teens will learn how to improve their decision-making skills and manage difficult moments. They can also have a discussion with a caring adult to further elaborate on their answers.
This worksheet can be paired with our DBT Pros and Cons Skill handout to further illustrate how to make it through a crisis by weighing out the pros and cons of their actions.
