DBT Myths About Emotions (PDF)
Misconceptions about emotions can hinder the process of effectively managing them. These misconceptions are often shaped by the messages we receive from others, which reflect their personal beliefs toward their own feelings. One way to debunk these myths is by first understanding that emotions can fluctuate over time and that they’re not always reliable sources of truth.
The DBT Myths About Emotions PDF handout includes 16 common myths or misconceptions about emotions. For example, myth #1 is about expressing emotions as a sign of weakness and myth #3 is about emotions being “stupid” and “useless.”
Kids and teens who learn these common misconceptions can feel more accepting of their own emotional experiences and those of other people. When used in a group setting, this handout can be accompanied by a role-playing activity in which children can act out scenarios that represent each myth. They can also have discussions about why each belief is flawed and explore an alternative belief that’s healthier and more factual.
Our Myths About Emotions DBT Worksheets can be included to assist in further engagement and application of the myths about emotions skill.
