Common Types of Anxiety in Kids and Teens

People can experience different types of anxiety, each with unique causes and effects that can make daily activities challenging. Some common ones for young clients include intense fears of specific things (phobias) and feeling nervous in social situations (social anxiety). These worries can make it difficult for them to do well in school, make friends, and enjoy activities.
The Common Types of Anxiety in Kids and Teens handout provides an overview of anxiety disorders that children and adolescents often experience, such as social anxiety, phobias, and panic disorder. Each type is explained in straightforward language to help clients recognize and understand the symptoms they may be experiencing.
This handout can assist caring adults in helping kids identify the feelings and symptoms they might be experiencing, and learn how to cope using different skills.
After reviewing the handout, kids and teens can incorporate daily activities to support anxiety management, such as journaling about how they feel, trying relaxation exercises like deep breathing or mindfulness, and exercising.
This handout can be found in our 6-page Coping Skills for Anxiety handouts bundle.
