Take A Break (PDF)

Taking a break for mental health means stepping away from tasks or situations for a short time to rest and reset your mind. It can involve doing activities you enjoy — such as listening to music or going for a walk.
The Take A Break handout explains the purpose of this coping skill and introduces six simple ways to practice it. It also offers clients a variety of activities they can enjoy during their break. The handout wraps up with a reminder to give themselves permission to pause and recharge.
A key benefit of taking breaks is that they can improve mental abilities by reducing tension and restoring focus. Kids and teens who take a break to clear their minds during difficult homework can then jot down key points or next steps before returning to the task.
Another helpful tip is to set a timer for their break so they can fully relax without losing track of time.
