Sensory Anchoring Handout

Coping skills are helpful tools that support emotional regulation. Sensory anchoring is one technique that clients can use, which involves using their five senses. As they can see, hear, feel, smell, or taste, individuals can ground themselves in their environment.
The Sensory Anchoring Handout teaches clients how to use their five senses to ground themselves in stressful or overwhelming moments. It provides steps for creating their sensory anchors. Examples include a photo of a peaceful place, a calming scent, and natural sounds.
Using this skill promotes emotional regulation, reduces anxiety, and strengthens mindfulness. We recommend practicing it together so your child becomes familiar with each step, then instruct them to use it independently when needed.
