It’s Okay to Make Mistakes

Some kids fear making mistakes because of the pressure to be perfect, not wanting to fail, or the possibility of disappointing others. In reality, everyone makes mistakes and experiences bad days. Research shows that the brain has a built-in “error detector” called the ERN (Error-Related Negativity) and this signal happens automatically when we make a mistake, even before we realize it. As we grow older, this signal gets stronger.
The It's Okay to Make Mistakes poster features affirmations that hone a client’s mindset to embrace their errors and mistakes. It starts with the phrase "It's okay to..." followed by encouraging statements that help them feel understood. This decor is perfect for mental health professionals or educators’ spaces that teach self-compassion.
By understanding that mistakes can help them improve, kids and teens can build confidence, learn to take calculated risks, and try new things. When they learn to accept their mistakes, they can use these experiences as a source of motivation to keep moving forward.
Caring adults can engage in discussions with kids that encourage reflection on past mistakes and how they fuel personal growth. Our Overcoming Failure handout is a helpful resource that can add value to the conversation.
