7 Ways To Reduce Overthinking

Overthinking, also known as rumination, happens when children get stuck replaying worries or upsetting thoughts in their minds. The thoughts often revolve around future thoughts or past scenarios. This can happen in many different situations in a child’s life and may leave them feeling overwhelmed. Over time, the stress caused by constant overthinking can increase the risk of physical and mental health problems.
The 7 Ways to Reduce Overthinking handout serves as a resource that clients can use anytime they notice repetitive worries. It starts by introducing what overthinking is and immediately walks through each strategy. Each one is presented with a clear explanation and an accompanying icon so that clients can remember them.
Using this handout can help kids and teens manage their worries effectively and have space to focus on what matters most. Over time, learning to cope with overthinking also supports their resilience in school, at home, and in their relationships with others.
A helpful tip for using this handout is to keep it somewhere accessible. Encourage them to try one strategy at a time and see which works best for different situations!
This handout pairs well with our 5 Types of Overthinking handout, or Bedtime Overthinking handout.
